Overcoming Barriers to Physical Activity and Social Isolation - DE23 Active

The DE23 Active Project has positively impacted many individuals' lives. This gentleman’s story is a powerful example of how inclusive and supportive environments can help individuals overcome personal barriers.

His journey highlights the importance of the DE23 Active project, proving that age and disability should never be a barrier to leading an active and fulfilling life.

A gentleman in his seventies faced social isolation and was not physically active due to his visual impairment. While he knew he needed to change his circumstances, the barriers presented by his disability made it challenging to take the first step.

Determined to make a change, he visited the Pakistan Community Centre in search of a job or volunteering opportunity and took the first step. However, he found more than just a potential role; he discovered a welcoming and inclusive space that encouraged him to become active and socially connected.

While at the Pakistan Community Centre, he learned about the Active Men Warm Hub, a weekly initiative that encourages men to stay active and engaged. He decided to stay for the Wednesday session, where he was introduced to walking football and badminton.

Initially hesitant due to his visual impairment, he was reassured and encouraged by the supportive atmosphere of the group. As he continued attending, he gained confidence, built friendships, and found joy in movements, something that had been missing from his life for a long time.

Through the Active Men Warm Hub, he joined a group of 18 participants for a day out at We Are Padel – Derby. Despite his visual impairment, he embraced the challenge of trying Padel, a sport he had never played before.
