Getting support for your mental health
There are a number of mental health services based in Derby and Derbyshire that are there to offer you support:
- The Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support Service is a freephone service available to everyone living in Derbyshire - both young people and adults. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you or your loved one are experiencing distress or anxiety, or feeling that you cannot cope, call 0800 028 0077 for support over the phone. That support could be about your mental health but you can also talk through practical issues that may be causing concern.
- Derby Safe Haven provides support for people over the age of 18 in Derbyshire, who are experiencing a period of mental ill health or crisis. The service is run by Richmond Fellowship, a national mental health charity, in partnership with the Derbyshire Mental Health Helpline and Support. You can now self-refer directly to the Safe Haven by calling: 0330 008 3722. You can also visit them in person at 309 Burton Road, Derby DE23 6AG. Safe Haven is open from 16:30 till midnight, 7 days a week, including seasonal holidays.

Derby City Life Links provides a wellness and mental health recovery service tailored to meet your needs.
- Local Talking Therapy services (also known as Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services) can help you to manage depression, low mood, stress or panic.

NHS Derby and Derbyshire Emotional Health and Wellbeing Website has been designed collaboratively by professionals who work across Derby and Derbyshire to help plan and deliver care and support for people who are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed, or just want to feel happier.
- Relationships Derby (formerly Relate Derby and Southern Derbyshire) offers support for every kind of relationship including counselling for individuals, couples and intimate partner relationships, children & young people and psychosexual therapy, prioritising direct human connection between our highly skilled practitioners and our clients.
- Disability Direct offers a free, confidential Talking Therapies service. This face to face Talking Therapy service is available for disabled people and their families, carers and anyone struggling with their mental health. The therapists use integrative therapy with a combination of CBT, Person Centred Counselling and Attachment Theory. The therapists can offer support to neurodiverse clients if they are within the therapist's competency, this would have to be assessed beforehand. Disability Direct offer an initial assessment session followed by 12 talking therapy sessions. So, each client receives 13 sessions in total. Social prescribing is a person-centred approach focusing on what matters to you. It can support with signposting and accessing organisations and services that could benefit your current situation. This could include (but is not limited to) loneliness and isolation, mental health, community services, benefits, debt management, volunteering and housing.
You can also access national helplines and online support chat services:
- Anxiety UK run a live chat and helpline
- OCD Action run Skype and phone support groups
- MIND has an infoline, which provides an information and signposting service.
Getting help for your mental health in a crisis

If you feel like your life is at risk, or if you have seriously harmed yourself, call 999 immediately as this is an emergency. If you need medical help but can keep yourself safe for a while, call ‘NHS 111’ by dialing 111
- Samaritans provides non-judgmental emotional support for those experiencing feelings of distress, despair or suicidal thoughts. Tel: 116 123 free helpline (24 hours), or email jo@samaritans.org.
- Use the Staying Safe website for support, information and making your own safety plan.
