Local government reorganisation in Derby & Derbyshire - Have Your Say
In February 2025, the government invited all councils in Derby and Derbyshire to develop proposals for a single council responsible for all local government functions in the area.
The government received five proposals and has now launched a consultation to get your views on which proposal, if any, to implement.

The consultation will be open until Thursday 26 March 2026.
Five proposals were made by the following councils:
1. Derbyshire County Council proposed 1 unitary council comprising the current areas of: Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derby, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, High Peak, North-East Derbyshire, and South Derbyshire
2. Amber Valley Borough Council proposed 2 unitary councils. These would comprise the current areas of:
- Northern Derbyshire: Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, High Peak, and North-East Derbyshire
- Southern Derbyshire: Derby, Erewash, and South Derbyshire
3. Bolsover District Council and North-East Derbyshire District Council proposed 2 unitary councils. This includes a request to split existing district council areas between the proposed new councils. These would comprise the current areas of:
- Northern Derbyshire: Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, High Peak, North-East Derbyshire plus 21 parishes from Amber Valley
- Southern Derbyshire: Derby, Erewash, South Derbyshire plus 14 parishes from Amber Valley
4. Chesterfield Borough Council, Derby City Council, Erewash Borough Council, and High Peak Borough Council proposed 2 unitary councils. This includes a request to split existing district council areas between the proposed new councils. These would comprise the current areas of
- Northern Derbyshire: Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, High Peak, North-East Derbyshire plus 21 parishes from Amber Valley
- Southern Derbyshire: Derby, Erewash, South Derbyshire plus 14 parishes from Amber Valley
5. South Derbyshire District Council proposed 2 unitary councils comprising the current areas of:
- Northern Derbyshire: Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire Dales, High Peak, and North-East Derbyshire
- Southern Derbyshire: Amber Valley, Derby, Erewash, and South Derbyshire
Derbyshire Dales District Council did not submit a proposal.
The consultation asks questions about each proposal to help inform the assessment of the proposals.
