Our new 'Spotlight On' feature highlights the work of the fabulous local groups and organisations that we support. Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on the good causes that have signed up to benefit from our new Derby Community Lottery, to let you know more about their great work and how the money raised will support them!
In this week's Spotlight On is Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre!
Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre (DCHC) has been providing children with holidays to Skegness for over 130 years.
A commercial traveller named Harry Sykes first started taking disadvantaged children from Derby to Skegness in 1891. A year later a house was rented and 223 children enjoyed a week’s holiday to Skegness. Today DCHC provides 660 holiday places per season. Read more about the history of DCHC here.
For the children that attend the centre, a holiday is a rarity or a one-off. The holidays give children the opportunity to make new friends and contribute to their education and life skills. They do activities throughout the week such as Ten-pin bowling, a visit to Mablethorpe, coastal walks and much more.
Children who come to DCHC are referred by their school or other authorities. Not only do these holidays give the children opportunities, but they also give parents, carers and guardians some important respite time.
All funds raised by DCHC through the Derby Community Lottery will go towards running the holidays and the holiday activities. As DCHC runs solely on donations, playing the Derby Community Lottery is a great way to support them.
