Ruchita Shaikh is elected as Community Action Derby’s new Chair
After ten years as a trustee of Community Action Derby and four years as Chair of the Board Kevin Curley CBE has stood down as Chair.
The new Chair, elected by trustees at their July meeting, is Ruchita Shaikh.
Ruchita is a formally trained visual artist and currently Chief Executive at Artcore, a visual arts charity in Derby. Artcore was established in India and moved to Derby in 2009. It now has a community base in Normanton and a city centre gallery.
Ruchita has been a trustee of Community Action Derby for ten years. She is a board member at Derby Theatre and Sahara Care, a charity that provides services to the Asian community. She was awarded ‘Most Inspirational Woman in the Arts 2017 in Derby’ and recently was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire
Ruchita said ‘Of all the things we can be proud of in Derby perhaps the most important is our cultural diversity. I want to see diverse ethnicities residing together in a cohesive and inclusive way, without compromising their individual identities. We should celebrate our similarities and our differences’.
Kevin Curley said ‘I’ve enjoyed chairing the trustee board and working closely with Kim Harper who provides excellent leadership both to Community Action Derby and the voluntary sector. I was very pleased when Ruchita accepted my nomination for the post of Chair. Her work spans wellbeing, mental health and the arts. What’s more her partnership, commercial and entrepreneurial skills will serve Community Action and the Derby voluntary sector well’.
Kevin is the Chair of Sierra Leone Education and Development Trust and leads their fundraising work on a volunteer basis.
We wish Ruchita well in her new role and thank Kevin for his support and guidance over the years as Community Action's Chair.
