Introduction

People volunteer for so many different reasons and volunteers can do almost anything! From helping older people with their shopping, to providing legal advice for a local charity, volunteers make a vital contribution to all aspects of community life.

Every year, we meet hundreds of prospective volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who are interested in volunteering with local organisations. Volunteering is a great way to get experience, fill a few spare hours, meet new people and develop some new skills.

We can help you find the voluntary work that suits you.

We run a drop-in service here at the Volunteer Centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm. Come in and chat with one of our Volunteer Centre Advisers, or call them on 01332 342272, to discuss volunteering opportunities or to make an appointment. We currently have over 500 volunteering opportunities available covering a huge range of different work areas and doing a multitude of different tasks. Volunteer Centre Adviser - A great opportunity to join our team!

We currently help over 1500 people each year in Derby to find suitable volunteering opportunities.

We are looking at recruiting a team of volunteer advisers who will be helping members of the public to identify volunteering opportunities that will use their talents. Potential volunteers access our service by email, telephone and coming into our office, and the Volunteer Centre Advisers are the main point of contact. You'll be transferring these enquiries into actual referrals to relevant organisations.

You will need to possess good literacy, numeracy and excellent communication skills. You'll also need to have basic IT skills (MS Word) too.

We are looking for someone who can challenge and be assertive, empathetic and supportive with people.

Also, as this role involves you having access to personal information about volunteers, it is important that you recognise and respect the need for confidentiality. We will ask you to comply with our confidentiality and data protection.

Training, induction and full ongoing support provided.

Volunteer Community Adviser - A great opportunity to join our Capacity Building team!

We are hoping you will be able to assist us by helping to support community and voluntary groups in the city to work through and record information using the Capacity Building Team's Health Check.  The process will involve meeting with members of the group's committee.

The role will begin with an internal focus within Community Action until your knowledge and confidence increases. This will involve shadowing at meetings with groups or visiting the groups with a view to delivering an outreach service in the future.

You will need some experience or a basic understanding of working in the voluntary and community sector.

You will need to possess good literacy and excellent organisational and communication skills.

We are looking for someone who has patience and understanding, who can be assertive, sympathetic and supportive working with group dynamics.

We are looking for someone with IT experience, an understanding of Microsoft word and working with databases.

Also, as this role involves you having access to personal information about volunteers, it is important that you recognise and respect the need for confidentiality. We will ask you to comply with our confidentiality and data protection policies.

You will be meeting a wide range of people from different backgrounds. To ensure that they all receive the same level of service we ask that you comply with our Equal Opportunities policy.

Volunteer Buddy

You'll be helping young disabled volunteers to volunteer by acting as a buddy. 

Your main tasks:


To attend the young disabled person's volunteering opportunity with them;
To support a young disabled person (age 16 - 25) to volunteer;
Help to boost confidence;
To speak up for the person if needed;
To support the person to be included and make friends; and
Assist with reading, writing and volunteering tasks if needed.

You'll receive training and support to enable you to do the tasks required.

Elvaston Castle Country Park - Environmental Volunteer

Our volunteer programme consists of a variation of habitat and wildlife management skills, giving the volunteers plenty of scope to gain new skills and develop their personal CVs in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. We manage a variation of habitats and have our own local nature reserve.

We meet at the Rangers office in the courtyard at 10am every other Sunday, all you need to do is turn up!

Enjoying Derby - Walk leader - Derbyshire Mind

Enjoying Derby is a new project delivering a programme of guided walks around the city of Derby to encourage people to enjoy the mental and physical health benefits of walking.

We are looking to recruit volunteers to lead our walks.  You'll receive training and support to enable you to perform the tasks required.  We are looking for walk leaders on Tuesdays from 12:45 to 2:45 and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00.

Shop Assistant - Chernobyl Children's Life Line

We are looking to recruit volunteers to help in the shop.  Activities will include sorting through clothes and donated items, displaying merchandise, operating the cash till and customer assistance.  This is a great way to build self confidence, meet new people and learn about the retail industry.
