Ultimate Dodgeball Fundraising Competition with the British Heart Foundation

The Youth Action Team delivered their Ultimate Dodgeball Fundraising Competition for the British Heart Foundation on Wednesday 27 October 2010 at Splash Fit Gym in Derby. It was also part of the CSV Make a Difference Day campaign.

There were 6 teams entered who paid a £20 entry fee and all the players got sponsored by friends and family for taking part. On the night the YAT had to step in and play as a team didn't turn up. All the games were kindly refereed by the University of Derby Ultimate Dodgeball team, which included the captain of the Scottish men's team. Sam Godfrey from Splash Fit led a mass team warm-up which certainly got all the players hearts pumping! The competition was split into 2 leagues of 3 with every team playing each other twice in a best of 3 game format. The top 2 teams from each league went through to the semi final with the losers playing in a 3rd and 4th place playoff and the winners going on to play in the grand final. SGG Boxing beat Connexions in a best of 5 game final. The SGG Boxing lads were brilliant all night and thoroughly deserved their win. For winning they received a certificate, medal and a BHF woolley hat. Everyone that took part on the night also got a certificate for their efforts.

A raffle was also run to raise extra money and this went very well with some great prizes kindly donated by local businesses from around Derbyshire.

The YAT's 6 months of hard work really paid off on the night and it was a massive success with some very good feedback. Sophie Jardine from BHF thought this was the first adult Ultimate Dodgeball fundraiser that the BHF had been involved with in the region and possibly nationally!

The grand total raised is £933.20p. The vinvolved team and YAT would like to thank everyone who supported the event and helped raise this money for such a worthy cause.

YAT Newsletter December 2010

Fancy finding out a little bit more about the YAT and the team? Take a look at the December 10 edition of our Youth Volunteering in Derby newsletter 'The YAT' by clicking here. The next edition will be out in March 2011.

YAT For Hire!!

As well as the YAT going out and promoting volunteering to other young people across Derby, they also like to get involved in one-off volunteering projects themselves. With the summer holidays coming up a lot of them will have some time to spare. In the past they have helped at events, children's activities, the elderly, gardening and decorating. So if you have any projects which you think the YAT could help you with for a day then please get in touch with Thom Kellogg with your ideas.

YAT Celebration Day

On Sunday 28th March 2010 the YAT got a chance to celebrate and enjoy a well deserved day out for all their efforts in the 2nd year of the vinvolved programme. They obviously had to do some volunteering before they got the chance to let their hair down! So in the morning they help paint a community hall that was looking tired and run down. After there it was straight off to McDonalds for a quick bite to eat before the fun started. They went to Wild Park Leisure in Brailsford to do their 10 mile Quad Trek across the fields, up hills, through puddles and woods. The YAT had a great day that they deserved for another successful year for the programme. The YAT have now planned for the next year so will again be out and about helping promote youth volunteering across Derby.

Springfield School Volunteering Day

The Youth Action Team again went out over the Easter holidays to help a local school transform an overgrown area next to the school in to a sensory garden. The YAT went to Springfield Primary School in Spondon to cut, hack, dig and move all the bushes, leaves, rubble, fences and trees that meant the garden couldn't be used.

The YAT transformed the area so it can now be used by the school and children for lessons and environmental projects. The head teacher is now going to consult with his school council about the design and how they want the garden to look. YAT have offered to go back in and work with the children to help them turn it in to the garden they want.

One of the volunteers on the day Carl Edwards said " I helped out in the February half term and really enjoyed the day so thought I would help out again. It has been a tough day, but the sun was out and we had a great time helping the school so they can now turn the area in to a sensory garden"

YAT First Aid Course

In February half term the Youth Action Team took part in a one day first aid course run by St John Ambulance. The tutor was Hilary Corrigan who is Mum to Tom, one of our YAT Members. Throughout the day the YAT learnt all the basic and emergency first aid procedures. This included bandaging, CPR and the recovery position. It was a very practical day and the YAT can now use the skills they learnt in their everyday life, and in their volunteering if ever needed.

Photos of the day can be found on our facebook page. Just search vinvolved Derby city and add us as a friend.

Moorhead Primary School - Volunteering Day

The Youth Action Team again went out over the February half term to help a local school transform their over grown garden and pond. The YAT went to Moorhead Primary School in Alvaston to cut, hack, dig and move all the bushes, leaves, rubble, fence and trees that were over grown and meant the garden and pond couldn't be used.

The YAT transformed the area so it can now be used by the school and children for lessons and environmental projects. The day was topped off after we pick up some slabs and found about 15 frogs (1 which we think was pregnant) and 4 newts that we reintroduced to the pond. Large stones were added to the pond so the frogs had some where to sit.

We now hope that the garden and pond will attract more wildlife to the area and the school have plans to develop the garden even further now the ground work has been done. A big thank you to the YAT for all their hard work and to Steph Bergin at the school who helped organise the day and looked after everyone with plenty of tea and biscuits.

YAT Planning & Reviewing Session

At the February YAT meeting we spent the session reviewing year 2 of the project and planning for year 3. To get as many YAT members there as possible we put on a pizza night mixed in with plenty of haribos!! The YAT were great and very honest in their assessment of the year. We then looked at what we could improve on and what we would like to do in year 3. From this we have produced a YAT Action Plan which will help and guide the YAT in their activities for the coming year 2010-2011.
