Volunteer on the Programme

Community Action hoz

The National Citizen Service (NCS) programme is a full time volunteer programme for young people aged 16. It is managed by the youth volunteering charity V and delivered in Derby city by Community Action. The delivery of the programme starts in July 2011 and finishes in September 2011. There will be recruiting of the participants, a selection day, a taster day and training/induction for volunteers before July 2011 so volunteers can get involved now. The programme is over 7 to 8 weeks and 60 young people will complete the programme in 2 teams of 30. The programme involves 4 weeks of residentials including sleeping over and a further full-time week where participants go home at night, then 3-4 weeks of part-time involvement including a graduation event to celebrate the programme and the participants achievements.

Ideal skills we are looking for are:

Ability to form safe and trusting relationships with young people

To be discreet and confidential

To be non-judgemental

Good sense of humour

Good listening and team work skills

A genuine interest in working with young people who are from all areas of the community in Derby

Ideally experience of working with young people (either in a paid or voluntary role)

Ideal opportunity for someone on a University or College course in youth or social work looking for experience

Commitment to the full time programme and young people involved

Awareness of the challenges of a full time volunteer programme

We are looking for Volunteer Peer Mentors aged 18-25 to volunteer on the programme and support the project staff to deliver this great opportunity for young people so they achieve the most out of the 7-8 weeks. We are looking for volunteers to commit to the full 7-8 weeks, but will accept people who can volunteer for some weeks of the programme if not all of it. The closing date for applications is Friday 29th April 2011 due to a CRB check needing to be completed by all volunteers.
